Arithmetic to Mythos

A layperson's ladder from numbers to machines that think

In 2019, I wrote a short post trying to make sense of Artificial Intelligence for myself — not as a technologist, but as someone who had wrestled with the North West Corner method in college and always suspected those dusty mathematical exercises meant something larger. That post ended with AI. Today, I need to climb higher.

The hand that once rocked the cradle of computing has reinvented itself again. What began as arithmetic — the humble act of adding and multiplying — has become something that wakes up in the morning, finds vulnerabilities in software nobody knew existed, and writes the exploit before you finish your chai.

This is not science fiction. This is Anthropic's Claude Mythos, released in April 2026. And yet, the ladder that leads here was built rung by rung from the same mathematics we all sat with in school.

Co-intelligence, not replacement

The fear that surrounds every rung of this ladder is always the same: the machine will take our place. The calculator would make us innumerate. The spreadsheet would eliminate accountants. The internet would end bookshops. And now AI will render human thinking redundant.

But I have come to believe — and my M-ed-ucation post from 2010 was already reaching toward this — that the abundance of the human brain does not lie in how much it can store or compute. It lies in how wisely it can be used as an instrument.

"The conditioning does not bother when understanding of self takes place and mere imitation is rejected. The shackles of memory are broken by wisdom."

I wrote that in 2010. I did not know I was writing about AI.

What Mythos represents is not the end of human thinking. It is the ultimate outsourcing of memory and pattern-finding — so that what remains uniquely ours becomes more precious, not less. Judgement. Ethics. Empathy. The question of what to do with the exploit once you've found it.

The great equaliser dimension is real too. A first-generation learner in a small town now carries in their pocket the same reasoning power once reserved for elite institutions. That is not a threat. That is salvation through knowledge — the very motto my school carried.

A college dropout never stops learning

Those mathematical axioms I once yearned to master — the approximation theorems, the linear programming problems, the Euclidean algorithm I used without knowing its name — they were not obstacles. They were the first rungs. Every one of them lives inside Mythos today.

The ladder did not leave us behind. We built it, rung by rung, across centuries. And the view from here is extraordinary.

The term 'Life' will always be a verb between past and future. So will intelligence — artificial or otherwise.
